Why did you apply to the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for Global and International Studies?:
I was born in Syria in 1999. I grew up in a small, beautiful and lovely village, on the mountain. I moved from Syria in 2015. Although, all of my siblings and their families reside in the United States, it was still hard for me to start a new life, to use a different language, learn a new culture and to make friends. I applied to the governor’s school because I love to learn about global issues.
What would you say to a student questioning whether or not they should apply to the Governor’s School?:
Governor's school changed the way I think and the issues that I care about, it made me think about climate change, migration, global issues, people around the world, different cultures and many other problems in the world that I had never thought about before attending the program.
Describe a memorable experience while attending the Governor’s School. :
This program gave me the opportunity to spend a whole month on the campus with people from different places from all around Pennsylvania, who shared the same thoughts and ideas as me, who cared about the same things that I care about. We struggled together, we helped each other, we worked hard and we put ourselves in other people's shoes.
What is one thing that you learned that impacted you? Or that you took home and utilized to make an impact in your community?:
The program taught me how to make a good argument, how to look at things from other perspectives, to open my mind and accept different opinions, to think about nature and care about it, and to love everybody even if they are different.
Anything else you would like to say?:
The program was one of the best experiences that had ever happened to me, it changed the way I live completely. I am no longer afraid to say my opinions and to share my ideas and beliefs with others, even if they do not have the same opinions as me.
