An Average Day At Governor's School

Theres no such thing! However, below is your average day/timeline for the week, the things you do during each class and on the weekends will vary day-to-day and week-by-week.

Monday - Friday

8:30 AM - 10:00 AM Language Class (Arabic or Chinese): Students will learn one of these two languages through a mixture of traditional language instructor and cultural immersion. In the past students have recited poetry, learned songs, watched films, and performed dances at the closing ceremony in their learned foreign language.

10:00 AM - 10:15 AM Break/snack

10:15 AM - 12:30 PM Intro to Global Studies: Students will learn in many different ways during their global studies class, some of which will be very different than a traditional classroom. Students will participate in simulations such as the Copenhagen Summit on Climate Change to reach a compromise between many different global actors. They will play games to learn about different issues and then create their own to bring awareness to a global health crisis. Guest speakers will deliver lectures on their area of expertise. Local Organizational leaders will visit to discuss how their organization makes an impact, and teach students about their capacity to change the world.

12:30 PM - 2:00 PM Lunch: Eat at any location approved with your Panther Funds card in Oakland (or another if you are willing to pay out of pocket)

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Structured Study Hall

3:00 PM - 4:30 PM Argumentation: Students learn to think critically, examine information presented to them, and construct an argument for complex issues facing the world and specific communities.

4:30 PM - 5:30 PM Free period or field trips

5:30 PM - 7:00 PM Dinner: Eat at any location approved with your Panther Funds card in Oakland (or another if you are willing to pay out of pocket)

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM Evening Activity: This portion of the day can vary greatly. This could be a supplemental movie viewing lead by RAs that further elaborates on topics learned in class followed by a short discussion. This may be a cultural night such as Origami Making, or creating your own traditional African sling weapons. On Wednesdays this time (as well as dinner) will be community night. The whole Governor School community will eat together and then break into smaller groups to do activities planned by our Resident Life Counselors to build relationships, explore the local area, or just to have fun! It can and also will be left open for students to just relax, watch TV, play games, or hang out.

9:00 PM Dormitory Curfew: Students must be in the dormitory by 9PM.

10:00 PM Room Curfew: Students do not have a "bed time" but they must be in their own rooms at 10:00PM. Classes begin at 8:30 AM the following day.
