Why did you apply to the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for Global and International Studies?:
I was looking for an educational experience which would challenge me beyond my ordinary high school curriculum, as well as a new experience which would enrich my personality as a whole. I was interested in the intense curriculum and broad set of topics which were offered at the program, particularly the month-long instruction in a rare foreign language. In general, I was motivated by my search for an educational challenge and interesting new experiences.
What would you say to a student questioning whether or not they should apply to the Governor’s School?:
Given that an application is free and requires relatively little effort, I would absolutely recommend applying. Even if someone is on the fence about applying or uncertain about the month-long commitment, an application is harmless and completely non-committal until late spring. Of course, I would also urge applicants to take the next step and actually attend the program, since it is an amazing experience. The connections I formed with fellow students, the deep perspectives I gained on global issues, as well as the rather impressive foundation I gained in Chinese (for only one month of study) erased all my hesitations about the program.
Describe a memorable experience while attending the Governor’s School. :
By far, the most surprising experience in the Governor’s School was staying up for hours in the dorm lounges with fellow students and discussing a wide breadth of topics, ranging anywhere from our views on societal contracts of government to our favorite Netflix TV shows. Following these lengthy discussions, the students and I would stumble into our rooms and quickly fall asleep, then wake up tired and regretful the following morning, only to get lost in another similar discussion the following night.
What is one thing that you learned that impacted you? Or that you took home and utilized to make an impact in your community?:
My Chinese instruction noticeably stands out among all my other classes and lessons, all of which were remarkable and impactful. The Chinese lessons, however, have stayed with me for a surprisingly long time—even writing this in early October, I can still remember a large amount of phrases and language theory, with, I must admit, fairly little practice or rehearsal. Language study fascinates me in general, so I consider the ability to gain such a strong foundation in a completely foreign language, as well as to gain such a deep insight into that language’s culture, extremely valuable.
Anything else you would like to say?:
Presumably, if you are reading online testimonials regarding the program, you have already thought about applying. So do it! Convince yourself to spend a month of your summer with the brightest, most driven people from across the state and to learn and discuss a variety of global issues. You will make plenty of great memories and all of your hesitations will seem laughable once you arrive at the University of Pittsburgh campus.
